A safe railway runs on reliable and continuous communication. That’s why this month, we’re focusing on the Future Communications and Positioning Systems Advisory Group (FC&PS). This group has a challenging remit. They steer the industry in a technical field that is constantly evolving.
The FC&PS works to support the rail industry applying new advanced communications and positioning technologies. They find better ways to make communications and positioning systems serve as crucial enables for a safe and future railway. They advise on how to design trains for better connectivity. The FC&PS’s work in all these areas is guiding the industry towards achieving the Rail Technical Strategy vision.
FC&PS boasts a strong and enthusiastic membership, bringing unique insights on emerging communications and positioning technologies to support the group’s dual aims of informing and enabling the rail industry.
The group has more than 35 members from the rail and communications sectors, including TFL, Nokia UK, Network Rail and Cisco Systems. Coming together are members from thirteen suppliers, five infrastructure managers, three passenger train operators, two representatives of the Railway Industry Association, and one manufacturer. Their meetings are joined by two members of RSSB and observed by DfT and the ORR. In all, they create a powerful, forward thinking advisory group that looks to the future of communications technology. Their combined expertise is ensuring that communication and positioning technologies meet the reality of rail’s needs.
