Horizon: celebrating a year of informing rail leaders
Chief Executive Mark Phillips celebrates the first anniversary of Horizon, RSSB’s magazine for rail leaders.

This issue of Horizon marks the magazine’s first full year in publication. And what a year it’s been. Across the year, our editorial team has interviewed several rail leader representatives, shared insights from our board, and covered topics as diverse as sustainability, the economy, and mental health.
We launched Horizon in May 2023 to engage more meaningfully with rail leaders like you—to bring you the latest from around the industry and from within RSSB.
Our hope was, and still is, that tailoring this publication towards senior rail leaders would help drive the high-level collaboration necessary for our industry to thrive. By bringing to light a range of topical issues and insights from industry experts, we hoped to bring together those senior voices and drive improvement together.
I’ve even appeared in a couple of issues along the way. As I said in my interview for the December issue, the rail industry is in a difficult position at the moment. We’re facing ongoing challenges, including adjusting to the post-pandemic landscape and offering the best service we can amid industrial action.
Coupled with the UK’s current economic conditions, and the need to save cost, this means we must view the sector in a holistic way, recognising that each element affects another in some way.
Taking this view also means we have some unique opportunities that we can exploit. Horizon is where we’ll examine these issues and opportunities in more detail, pulling in expert insight to make clearer the way forward.
We understand the sheer volume of competing priorities that rail leaders need to juggle. Horizon exists to make that process a little bit easier. Our articles offer valuable insight on where to invest your company’s time and resources based on current challenges, showcase the RSSB products and services that support that effort, and provide real-world examples—through our member interviews—of that in action.
It’s important at RSSB that we’re continuing to meet your expectations and providing genuine value to all our members. This is why we’ve recently introduced polls into Horizon. You can now send us direct feedback on what you’re enjoying and what you want to see more of. So, please, share your thoughts; it will help us shape the publication so that it continues to bring you the insights you need.
Because it’s leaders like you who pave a lasting path for the rail sector. And we’re dedicated to delivering meaningful content that helps you achieve that progress. Horizon is, and will continue to be, your companion as you navigate the complexities of running an organisation like yours.
Focused on industry challenges, our monthly magazine aims to stimulate conversation, exchange insights, share knowledge to support you and your company's operations. So, what does that look like in numbers?
