How green are your credentials?

The rail industry has long been at the centre of sustainable transport. But sustainability can be a difficult thing to quantify at the level of an individual company. This is especially true when our goals and challenges are changing along with the climate. When we can measure how sustainable an individual company is, we can also measure progress, target investment, and gain trust from our customers and partners.
We have designed a new tool to help individual rail companies track their progress toward sustainability. The Sustainability Maturity Tool is a self-assessment tool that allows you to score yourself against the goals in the Sustainable Rail Blueprint. It’s currently available for RSSB members to use in a beta testing phase.
The tool allows companies to measure and track outcomes across three key areas: emissions, natural environment, and social sustainability. These align with the strategic aims set out in the Blueprint. The measurements identify strengths as well as areas for improvement. Using this tool will help leaders build a clear path for their company towards a sustainable future. Working toward that mutual goal will help secure the longevity of our industry.
The tool works by asking a series of multiple-choice questions on topics in each key area. You answer by rating your company’s progress on a scale of one to five. The tool then analyses that data to provide an average maturity score for each topic. The tool is easy to use, allowing you to start a new assessment or continue an existing one from the dedicated homepage.
Companies who are already using the tool during the current testing phase are sharing their feedback, helping to shape and develop it before the full launch.
The Sustainability Maturity Tool provides a clear and easy-to-use way for rail businesses to assess their progress. By following the Sustainable Rail Blueprint, we know we’re on the right track. We hope this tool can help everyone on that journey and ensure that the rail industry remains at the centre of sustainable transport.
