The Sustainable Rail Executive
Meet the leadership group standing up for sustainability in GB rail.
The SRE supports and advises industry specialists in the Sustainable Rail Leadership Group (SLRG) and its ten technical subgroups. Their goal, since forming in 2021, is to bring sustainability upgrades to the rail industry. And to ensure those upgrades are affordable, collaborative, and ambitious.
The SRE’s flagship document is the Sustainable Rail Blueprint. The Blueprint is the first ever whole-industry framework for achieving a sustainable railway, looking as far ahead as 2050. It shows how to and who can deliver real change in environmental and social issues. From reducing emissions and food waste to promoting recycling, the SRE oversees rail's adoption of this framework for change.
SRE members are rail industry leaders with the passion and influence to bring about cultural change. Together, they provide the direction needed to advocate for sustainability progress. The group meets three times each year and is chaired by Malcolm Brown of Angel Trains Ltd.
The SRE provides governance to the Sustainable Rail Groups and the delivery of the RSSB-led Sustainable Rail Programme. They channel information between the RSSB Board and the Sustainable Rail Groups, bringing in non-rail perspectives, overseeing external communication of relevant work, and addressing sensitive sustainability issues.

The next five years for the SRE will be all about embedding and promoting the Blueprint. The challenge now is to reach more colleagues and help those making investment decisions do so in a way that makes our railway even more sustainable.
Industry reform is coming, and uncertainty can be distracting. What is certain though is the need to decarbonise, reduce emissions, and maximise the positive social impact rail brings to communities. The Blueprint needs advocates industry-wide, and there is opportunity for rail leaders to affect real change.
