A ‘green team’: making strides in rail’s sustainability journey, together
A big team, with players from across the industry, is needed to achieve rail’s big decarbonisation goals.

Making rail greener will be no easy feat. Though our industry is already at a distinct advantage—with rail being the most eco-friendly mode of long-distance transport—obstacles aplenty stand before us.
What we in RSSB’s sustainability team keep seeing, though, is the power of teamwork. By that, we mean when we team up with cross-industry working groups and other rail organisations, we take steps—both big and small—towards an even greener railway.
A case in point is our recent work with the Sustainable Rail Executive, Rail Environment Forum, and Air Quality Working Group to improve air quality. It’s also shown in the benefits the Rail Social Value Tool is bringing to industry.
The online tool, developed in partnership with Network Rail, the DfT, and Loop, helps industry monitor and measure the social value of its work. It also supports sound investment decisions. Railway Mission has used it and gained recognition in both the Houses of Parliament and the media.
