The background: PTSRG first met in 2014 and has continued to evolve with the changing nature of risks on the railway. This quarter, the group welcomed a new Chair, Stuart Browning, who will be steering PTSRG on significant new projects. The core goal of the group is to understand the risks and challenges faced by passengers, the public, and the workforce in stations and on-board environments and build focused action plans to mitigate them.
The future: PTSRG is currently developing new workstreams aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility. These initiatives will address risks associated with train dispatch, identify best practices for managing stranded trains and passengers, and help achieve a consistent approach towards escalators and lifts. These new projects will see PTSRG progress towards its key business goal of making rail travel a practical and attractive option for everyone. Creating a framework for the platform-train interface (PTI) strategy will also be a core part of its work moving forwards. With 50% of the fatality risk to passengers being at the PTI, PTSRG aims to address PTI management through a risk-based approach by incorporating learnings from recent PTI events. Using our collective knowledge and commissioning new research where needed, our overall goal of keeping passengers, the public, and workers safe at the PTI remains a priority. This will bring industry-wide benefits for efficiency and cost as well as safety.
As we navigate through uncertain times, it is crucial for groups like PTSRG to unite passionate industry professionals in pursuit of common, virtuous goals that benefit both colleagues and customers. We will pursue the objectives outlined in Rail Health and Safety Strategy under ‘passenger operations’, aiming to reduce risk and enhance our collective maturity in this area. I am excited to support the group in its mission to ensure a safe environment for passengers and the public at stations, on platforms, and on-board trains.
