RSSB. Enhancing value to society and sustainability.
Rail is more than a mode of transport. It’s a lifeline
You want to add value to society and sustainability? We’re with you every step of the way.
Travelling by rail is already the most sustainable mode of long-distance transport for people and goods, being responsible for just 1.4% of the UK’s overall transport carbon emissions. However, there is a broader challenge for the rail industry. We need to improve our impact on the environment, local communities, and society—not just deliver net zero.
Rail is embarking on a gradual transformation, with organisations aligning their efforts to make the railway even more sustainable. Only by working together can we maximise rail’s benefits and help our industry become the backbone of a green transport system and economy.
The power of teamwork can be seen in the development of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint. It’s the first ever framework for the whole industry, providing a common view of the challenges and mapping out how industry wants to deal with them.
For many years, RSSB—which was asked by the Department for Transport to lead the creation of the Blueprint—has been working to help the railway reduce its impact on the environment. We’re supporting industry through our projects to understand the decarbonisation challenge, how the railway affects local air quality and biodiversity, and the social impacts it has. And as passengers and the whole of society have become increasingly motivated to address human impacts, so have we.
By continuing to innovate and work together, the rail industry can lead the way in creating a greener, more sustainable future for all.
