RSSB. Boosting freight safety and growth
Driving rail freight growth
Delivering £2.5bn in economic benefits a year, the freight sector is a pillar of Great Britain’s transport industry. It deserves investment.
If ever there were a hall of fame that recognised contributions to Great Britain’s economy, rail freight would undoubtedly have a plaque. Transporting tonnes of goods around the country each year, the sector delivers around £2.5bn in economic benefits. And it does so sustainably and safely.
These credentials are good—very good. But what if they could be better? The potential for freight growth is crystal clear, such that official growth targets have been set. However, like other parts of the rail industry, the sector has its share of challenges. To hit or even surpass the targets, the sector must overcome barriers to growth.
This isn’t a solo endeavour, with the sector left to singlehandedly drive its own advancement. A collective effort is essential, and all relevant parties must pull together. RSSB has a vital role here because freight operators are a valued part of our membership.
It’s our job to be acutely aware of the hurdles and the opportunities, and to leverage our talent and connections to support safe and sustainable growth. We’re making strides in our programmes of work for freight, and it’s encouraging to see our members benefit from this.

By analysing factors that limit freight capacity unnecessarily, we can reveal areas where small changes can make a big difference.
