Safe Insights: We have liftoff
Launching a new era of AI-powered safety data reporting.
After over 25 years of service, this month we bid a fond farewell to the Safety Management Intelligence System (SMIS). However, its pioneering, collaborative approach to collecting and sharing rail safety data will live on.

SMIS is replaced by our new, in-house designed, Safe Insights. But rest assured, we haven’t reinvented the wheel. Safe Insights takes the best bits of SMIS and sets them in a streamlined, user-friendly, AI-powered platform. These changes finally fulfil industry’s need for a faster, better integrated input system. So, what’s new?
AI-enhanced input: The system streamlines data collection, suggests categories, highlights gaps, and more.
Analytics capabilities: It facilitates faster data sharing and better understanding.
Integrated system: It connects with outside systems for seamless data collection, storage, and analysis.
The new Safe Insights system makes reporting safety events faster and easier than ever before. Our users will recognise and feel reassured by the familiar structure and layout of the reporting form, and will love the many improvements to the user experience, including the AI assisted template selector. With ongoing enhancements to follow throughout the year, Safe Insights represents a major step forward in how we manage safety data across the rail industry.
Safety is just one aspect of the complex railway system that can benefit from quality data sharing and analysis. While Safe Insights is the first voyage for this platform, we’re already looking ahead to the next missions—integrating health, wellbeing, and sustainability data.
We built Safe Insights in partnership with our members and key industry groups, including the Freight Safe Programme. Their feedback and influence have been invaluable in ensuring that Safe Insights is equally beneficial for the freight sector as for passenger operators.
Freight companies are already benefiting from sharing their safety data by gaining more insight into the unique safety challenges of their sector. A rising tide lifts all ships, so the more freight data that’s reported, the better the value and benefits get.
The National Freight Safety Group are currently working on a project called Freight Safe Insights. They’re developing an ecosystem that will help identify emerging trends and support consistent risk-based decision making for freight. This will allow the sector to interrogate and exploit their data, driving consistent and proportionate management of freight risk.
Freightliner Group began using Safe Insights in November 2024. As an early adopter, they’ve been sharing feedback throughout their changeover from SMIS. This has been essential for us to make improvements and streamline the adoption process in time for the wider launch. In this video, Anthony Willet, Continual Improvement Manager at Freightliner Group, shares his experience of migrating to Safe Insights.
Anthony and his team found the system to be user-friendly and straightforward compared with SMIS. He highlighted that the intuitive design and introduction of AI tools make it a much easier system to use. Updating events is simpler, with a single button click, and the system clearly highlights incomplete sections.
The new navigation features and AI tools make Safe Insights a much easier system to use.
If your team is worried about what to expect from the transition, share this video.
As Safe Insights launches, we want to hear more stories like Anthony’s. Are you ready to adopt the system now, and are you migrating from SMIS? What have been the most helpful data reports for your company?
Building and sharing successful strategies will strengthen Safe Insights as a reporting tool and upskill rail as a sector. Get in touch with your account manager to share your Safe Insights experiences with us and the wider industry.
