RSSB. Accelerating the adoption of new technology
Giving sustainability data the green light
It’s full speed ahead for the new tool solidifying sustainability reporting.
Freya Middlehurst Sustainability Analyst, RSSB
For too long, the rail industry has had a fragmented approach to sustainability reporting. Although basic data collection has been mandatory, our members have voiced a clear need for deeper insights to truly drive meaningful change. The existing system lacked the detail needed to identify areas for improvement, foster cross-industry learning, and effectively measure sustainable development. It’s time to shift gears.
Our vision was for every rail firm to be able to compare their sustainability performance against an industry benchmark. Built on robust quantitative data, benchmarking empowers organisations to pinpoint their strengths and areas needing attention. A clear understanding of the state of play, paired with opportunities for learning and collaboration, will propel the entire sector towards greater sustainability.
To meet this need, we developed the Sustainable Insights Reporting Tool. It’s a centralised platform where rail firms report their data under the key themes of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint. For users, it replaces the previous Environmental Reporting Tool, consolidates existing data reporting, and tracks progress through insightful data. But for the industry at large, the benefits are even better.
Launched in March 2025, the Sustainable Insights Reporting Tool has already begun gathering data on crucial sustainability metrics, including zero waste, nature, and water management. Coming from companies across the industry, this data is collected into a single bank—the first of its kind in rail sustainability. From this, we can draw understanding and insights that make the case for green strategic planning and investment.
For leaders in rail, this tool is a catalyst for change. It empowers data-driven decisions that will steer us towards a more sustainable and prosperous future. It also paves the way for a truly collaborative effort towards sustainable development in our industry and wider society.
The Blueprint lays out the path to net zero by 2050. It presents rail’s view on ‘what’ needs to be achieved, ‘how’ to deliver it, and ‘who’ needs to contribute:
the ‘what’: 11 sustainable rail topics, across emissions, natural environment, and social sustainability
the ‘how’: six common solutions, identified as the primary enablers of sustainable rail
the ‘who’: the key roles played across the industry in delivering sustainable rail.
