The Health and Wellbeing Action Group (HWAG) improves data-driven and evidence-based decision-making to prevent and manage health and wellbeing issues in the industry.
The HWAG and the Occupational Health and Hygiene Advisory Group work closely, taking a holistic approach for a healthy, safe, and sustainable railway, recognising the overlap in their remits.
Task and finish groups formed by the HWAG address priority areas and provide solutions for identified issues. The group explores a variety of topics—data insights, culture, mental wellbeing, musculoskeletal issues—to support changes in health and wellbeing prevention and management.

Wellbeing is everyone's responsibility. Just as we wouldn't expect an employee to take full accountability for their safety without appropriate PPE or risk assessments, there is a growing expectation that employers will take greater ownership of their workforce's health. In the rail industry, where an aging workforce is a concern, these pressures will become even more pronounced.
The rail industry must ensure it secures the necessary resources for wellbeing. Wellbeing teams need individuals with a passion for wellbeing, and the right qualifications and knowledge. This is essential if we want to make tangible changes in how we approach wellbeing and ensure that our people thrive.

The Occupational Health and Hygiene Advisory Group (OHHAG) develops an improved approach to prevention of harm and early identification and intervention of work-related ill health risks. The group’s work on managing health exposure aligns with the Occupational Health and Safety risk area. They also consider the topic of public health.
The OHHAG supports industry-wide improvements in preventing and managing ill health exposures and outcomes. They deliver standards, tools, education, and awareness campaigns to support compliance, industry effectiveness, and improved leadership. Task and finish groups support the work plan’s delivery. By working closely with the Health and Wellbeing Action Group, OHHAG ensures a holistic approach for a healthy, sustainable railway—acknowledging overlaps of their remits.
Following years of success and progress in safety, we’re now aiming for similar progress in employee health. We need to champion early intervention for work-related health risks alongside dealing with emerging and chronic health conditions in our workforce. We are now recognising the huge impact ill health is having on our industry typically through sickness absence, loss of skills, and not attracting or retaining talent. OHHAG want to ensure our workforce and approach to occupational health and hygiene is fit for the future.
