Passengers self-evacuate from stranded DART

A commuter fainted and fell under a moving train at Independence station in Buenos Aires. The train was brought to a stand and the woman was lifted back to the platform. She was later taken to hospital, telling the local media that she double the line speed.

6 August, Spain

Passengers self-evacuate during forest fire, 20 injured

Around 20 passengers suffered burns, three of them seriously, after they jumped from a train when it was engulfed by a forest fire near Castellón. A number of passengers panicked and fled after breaking windows to escape.

2 September, Egypt

Three killed and nine injured when train strikes minibus in Nile Delta

A passenger train struck a minibus in the Nile Delta. Three people were killed; nine were seriously injured. Reports suggest the driver of the bus was unaware of the approaching train when he attempted to cross at an unofficial crossing point.

17 August, India

Passenger train collides with freight in Gondia, over 50 injured

At around 14:30 (local time), a passenger train heading from Nagpur from to Raipur struck the rear of a freight train at Gondia. More than 50 people were injured. Initial reports suggest the passenger train had been incorrectly signalled.

Shunter killed when train derails in yard at El Paso

A freight train derailed and one wagon overturned in El Paso, Texas, killing a shunter. The wagon also struck a gas meter, leading to a leak and the evacuation of nearby homes. The train had been given permission to proceed while a derailment device was on the tracks.

8 September, USA

Commuter faints and falls beneath moving train in Buenos Aires

Soon after 03:00 (local time), a Union Pacific freight entered a siding struck a rake of stabled wagons in Salton Sea, Nebraska. Two members of staff, both of whom had been ejected by the collision, were declared dead at the scene.

16 October, USA

Staff struck and killed by train in Philadelphia

At around 21:20 (local time), a passenger train struck and killed two track workers who were working on the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia. The workers had been involved in a long-term upgrade project, which was set to finish in December 2024. An investigation is under way.

27 September, Sri Lanka

Passenger train strikes stops, strikes building in Colombo

An empty coaching stock formation struck the buffer stops at Colombo station, before overriding them and striking an old building beyond. There were no reported injuries. The train had been set to run to the Dematagoda Yard for maintenance. An investigation has been launched.

9 September, Croatia

Three killed when freight strikes passenger train

At around 21:30 (local time), a freight train struck the rear of a passenger train near Novska, which is close to Croatia’s border with Bosnia. Three people were killed and 11 more were injured. An investigation is under way. A SPAD is suspected.

8 October, USA

Freight derails on underpass in Ohio, no reported injuries

On 8 October 2022, a freight train derailed above an underpass in Sandusky, Ohio. There were no reported injuries, but there was a leak of paraffin wax from one of the wagons. The local media cited ‘engine issues’ as the cause of the incident, although investigations are ongoing.

Passenger train strikes lorry at crossing in Waterbury, 10 injured

A passenger train struck a lorry on a level crossing in Waterbury, Connecticut. The vehicle had been involved in a road accident, after which it was driven onto the line just before the barriers lowered. The driver and nine rail passengers were injured.

21 October, USA

Freight customer staff killed during collision in Stonington, Illinois

At around 12:21 (local time), a freight train struck railway equipment at a level crossing in the yard of the Legacy Grain Cooperative (LGC) at Stonington, Illinois. One member of LGC staff was killed. The company closed all its rail-connected sites while investigations were conducted.
