Quarterly round-up: November and January, a number of incidents occurred across the globe. We present the highlights.

14 November, Australia

Freight derails in Victoria, containers dislodged but no reported injuries

At 04:30 (local time), a freight train derailed near Inverleigh, in western Victoria. There were no reported injuries and no dangerous goods involved, but a number of containers were dislodged and fell from their wagons.

17 November, Germany

Rear-end freight collision near Leiferde

In the early morning, a freight train, which had stopped at a signal near Leiferde, was struck by a following train formed of 25 tank wagons carrying propane. Its driver suffered minor injuries. The local fire brigade pumped out the propane, with some gas later burned off in a controlled manner.

7 December, Spain

Collision near Barcelona injures 155

At rush hour, two passenger trains collided at low speed on the outskirts of Barcelona. At least 155 people were injured, 39 requiring hospital treatment. Local media reports say one train struck the rear of the other while it was waiting at Montcada i Reixac - Manresa station.

21 November, India

Freight derailment at Korai station kills three, injures two more

At around 06:45 (local time), a freight train derailed at Korai station, killing three passengers. Seven people were also injured and required hospital treatment. The train was described as ‘speeding’ and created such impact that one wagon ran over a footbridge.

23 November, France

Freight derails and continues before striking infrastructure at Carcassonne

On 23 November 2022, a freight train derailed at Trèbes and ran for seven kilometres before striking the infrastructure at Carcassonne station. There were no reported injuries.

15 December, Germany

Allegedly drunk S-Bahn driver arrested

An S-Bahn driver skipped a number of station stops between Stuttgart and Weil der Stadt late and did not open the door to passengers at one platform. The police later arrested the driver, who was reportedly heavily intoxicated.

7 January, Mexico

Metro trains collide in Mexico City,
killing one

On 7 January 2023, a metro train struck another between Potrero and La Raza, Mexico City. One person was killed and 41 were injured, including the driver of one of the trains. The cause has yet to be established.

25 December, Serbia

Freight derailment in Pirot leads to ammonia leak

On 25 December 2022, a freight train carrying ammonia derailed in Pirot. As a result, 51 people required hospital treatment for suspected ammonia poisoning. An investigation is under way.

21 December, USA

Freight derails after striking lorry with long load in Tennessee

A freight train derailed after striking a lorry at a crossing in Collegedale, Tennessee. Two members of staff were injured. Its driver had been waiting at traffic lights beyond the crossing and was unaware the trailer was foul of the line.

2 January, India

Passenger train derailment in Rajasthan injures 26

At around 03:27 (local time), the Suryangari Express derailed in Rajasthan. There were no fatalities, but 26 people were reported injured. Reports say the incident occurred five minutes after the train had departed from Marwar junction.

8 January, Slovenia

Guard injured when freight derails at
Zidani Most

A freight train derailed at Zidani Most. A guard travelling in a special compartment fell 10 metres down the banks of the River Sava when it broke away. He suffered serious injuries. It is thought the train was overspeeding at the time of the incident.

13 January, Australia

Trains collide and derail in Sydney, no reported injuries

Shortly before 06:00 (local time), a freight train carrying empty containers derailed after colliding with a similar formation in Sydney. There were no reported injuries. The incident occurred as the trains traversed the same track during shunting.
