Strategic multiplier

We are at the start of a five-year journey to embed our strategic multipliers. The six multipliers are a new initiative that will be developed as we help industry address multi-system challenges.

Here we provide a summary of the work taking place in year 1 to address each multiplier and the associated commitments

1. Safety and health insights for the future
We will ensure industry can significantly improve occupational safety, work-related ill-health, and staff wellbeing. We will also help industry access confidential reporting. We will continue to support rail reform so that safety and the culture of collaboration is further reinforced.

2. Enabling automation and benefitting from artificial intelligence
We will develop guidance and mechanisms to give the industry greater confidence in embracing automation and AI solutions. We will incorporate into standards learning from the deployment of the train protection and warning system (TPWS) and speed supervision.

3. Improving testing capabilities
We will provide a framework for testing and validating assets. This will include how to determine and agree criteria for acceptability, identifying suitable methodologies, and how to interpret results.

4. Exploiting the value of data
We will identify key industry areas where improved interoperability would bring most benefit. We will enable improved interoperability through digitalisation and standardisation. This will include identifying and documenting the data flows and common data requirements for key industry systems.

5. Improving weather resilience and preparedness for a changing climate
We will intensify our targeted investment in operations by assessing the complex factors that affect the industry’s resilience to extreme weather events. We will strengthen that resilience further by identifying the ways these factors interact within the industry.

6. Embedding sustainability
We will incorporate The Blueprint into key industry contracts. We will also provide data architecture so there is monitoring, reporting, and analysis of sustainability metrics.
